Inspired by Doug's hard short rides I have been upping my intensity a bit. Last night I got close to the magical "about to hurl" point, I think. I even had the pain in my side like when I was really out of shape and started running. It really got bad at about 9 miles and I backed off enough to recover. Is that my liver protesting my legs excessive demand for glycogen? At that point I had my alltime best course avg speed of 19.7mph. Way faster than normal. I used the few times that traffic made me observe stop signs to accellerate hard. Ran harder gears than normal. Flew up the steep lttle climb at 3 miles. My avg HR was "only" 171 bacause I screwed up and the data set includes my cool down seen when the HR dives. I musta been around 180+ for 55 min when hammering . Can I truncate the data set to eliminate the cool down for analysis? I will have to see.
edit: So I Googled the side pain and found out it is called stitch pain and it affects runners particularly because the ground pounding coupled with deep breathing stretches ligaments between diaphram and liver...but I am on a bike. Go figure. I did ride uber hard last night though. Artice I read also suggests that shallow breathing could cause the pain and says to take deeper breaths. It is possible I was breathing shallow but I doubt it as I was using mucho oxygen riding fast. Breathing faster than normal could conceivable cause the same issue.
